‘Pedestrianization’ eyed in city zones

-

The National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) is now procuring consultants to conduct a study on the possibility of converting some urban roads and spaces in Cebu City for pedestrianization or non-motorized transport zones.

Neda 7 Director Efren Carreon said the cultural, historical and commercial district of the urban center is identified to be the study area at the cost of P3.5 million, which is targeted to finish by middle of 2019.

He said they are commissioning a group of consultants that will do it for Neda.

“We intend to determine the probable economic impact of pedestrianization on stakeholders based on identified parameters; and to recommend policies, program or project to enhance pedestrianization within the study area,” Carreon said.

Carreon said they would also like to see more green parks outside the concrete jungle that are walkable from the communities.

“This may trigger an urban renewal,” Carreon said in a press conference after speaking during the Our Cebu Program.

“Personally, I look at pedestrianization as a good alternative to move around. If you have noticed, in many developed countries, they are promoting pedestrianization, especially within the urban core. Why should we ride on vehicles when we can walk, which is beneficial to both persons and the environment?” Carreon said.

He said many studies show an increase in economic activities if pedestrianization is promoted.

“The common response to traffic is road construction and widening. But there is a limitation for space. Even if you have all the money in the world but you don’t have space, you can do nothing,” Carreon said.
