Illegal items confiscated from stalls in Barangay Babag, Lapu-Lapu City were too large, dangerous

Close to 300 illegal firecrackers were confiscated by the City Intelligence Branch of the LapuLapu City Police Office (CIB-LCPO) during their inspection Monday, Dec. 31.

The 283 different types of firecrackers were taken from different stalls in Purok Shooting Star, Barangay Babag, Lapu-Lapu City. Of those confiscated, 223 are small firecrackers known as “pop-pop” and 60 small, medium and large firecrackers known as “Dalogdog.”

The confiscated items are estimated to be worth P5,600.

They were confiscated for being oversized, which is dangerous.

Supt. Mark Gifter, chief of the CIB-LCPO, said that the operation is part of their continued monitoring of the sale of firecrackers in Barangays Babag, Canjulao and Kalawisan to ensure that no illegal firecrackers will be sold. These are the only areas where firecrackers could be sold in Lapu-Lapu City.

Not one person was arrested though as the sellers of the confiscated firecrackers immediately ran away when the police arrived.

Senior Supt. Limuel Obon, the LCPO director, earlier discouraged the public from using firecrackers to meet the new year in order to avoid accidents.

“Hangad na lang ka sa langit dala imong pag-ampo, malingaw man gihapon ka sa daghang colors, safe ka pa. Ug kadtong naa man gali nagpabuto dinha, ayaw na lang mo ug tan-aw kay naa tay mga kuan nganha nga na aksidente nagtan-aw ra. Ngano man? Didto sa ila nidagan (You can just look at the heavens, with prayers, you’ll still get the same amusement from the all the colors, and it’s safe. If there are firecrackers, stay away to avoid accidents. Why? Because some firecrackers go to their direction),” said Obon.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza earlier released an order that Oponganons could only use firecrackers in areas designated as firecracker zones or common areas in every barangay to avoid accidents.

Those caught violating the order could be arrested.

“That’s not allowed, they should avoid being caught,” said Radaza in Cebuano.
