Late push lifts Cebu Sharks over Pampanga Lanterns
Though he didn’t put up huge numbers and just attempted four shots the whole game, Kevin Villafranca made the biggest play of the night, hitting a game-winning layup with just four seconds left in Cebu City Sharks’ 69-68 nail-biting win over the Pampanga Lanterns on Jan. 12 at the Angeles University Foundation Gym in Angeles City, Pampanga.
The Sharks had a comfortable 54-47 lead going into the final quarter and brought the lead up to 11 points, 58-47, with back-toback baskets by William McAloney and Joel Lee Yu.
With the hometown crowd behind them, the Lanterns made a huge comeback with an offense anchored around guard Levi Hernandez, who had 13 in the fourth quarter.
Hernandez trimmed the lead down to three points, 67-64, with a jumper in the 1:11 mark.
Patrick Cabahug tried to answer with a three-pointer but missed his target. Hernandez split his free throws to cut it down to a two-point, 67-65, lead.
After yet another missed three by Cabahug, Juneric Baloria gave Pampanga the lead with a three-pointer with 23 seconds left.
Victor Nuñez attempted a two-pointer but missed. Luckily, Villafranca was there for the offensive rebound and the winning bucket. /
