activities to raise awareness on environmental conservation and protection and promote responsible mineral development.
Race to 1 million seedlings
By 2024, Carmen Copper targets to reach the number of planted seedlings to 1 million.
Carmen Copper targets to rehabilitate 15 hectares of land per year to achieve 1 million seedlings planted in time for the celebration of its 20th year of responsible operation in Toledo City. Carmen Copper has planted a total of 874,915 seedlings since 2007 and targeted to plant 125,085 seedlings within five years.
Minimizing environmental footprint
Sustainable mining is now an achievable reality. Carmen Copper has embarked on a more strategic approach to sustainable development by integrating sustainability in all facets of its operations, prioritizing environmental management, safety and health and social development.
In 2018, Carmen Copper secured ISO 14001:2015 for its Environmental Management System. It developed its 1.4-hectare arboretum into the Ecological Park that serves as the first environmental recreational facility showcasing the various native tree species of Toledo.
It maintains air emissions to below standard levels and consistently finds ways to reduce energy use to minimize its carbon footprint. Carmen Copper recycles 51% of water consumed per year and regularly conducts sampling to monitor the quality of water in sources. Carmen Copper ensures the proper disposal of effluents following regulatory standards. Waste water or tailings produced from ore processing are deposited at the secure Biga Tailings Storage Facility.
