PHINMA Group-owned Southwestern University has revamped its Business School (B-School) as it aims to be responsive to the industry’s changing needs today.
SWU Phinma president Chito Salazar said the fast changing business environment nowadays means the need to produce business people who can adapt to these changes.
“Business graduates of today must be different and flexible,” he said at the launch of the B-School on Feb. 12, 2020.
Today’s business world, potentially disrupted by technological advancements like automation and artificial intelligence, needs a new generation of young professionals.
Salazar noted the university is putting focus on business to expand its expertise from medical and allied health courses.
“Phinma knows business. It took us two years designing this new program to develop business people of today and ensure our graduates are responsive to the needs of the industry,” he said.
SWU Phinma is introducing a revamped curriculum for its programs in Business Administration, Accountancy, Hotel and Restaurant Management and Masters in Business Administration.
B-School Dean Danny Saracin said the new curriculum gives emphasis on real-world business applications, where students are immersed into a case-driven, project-based and multidisciplinary learning method.
“Studies have proven that lectures are not that effective anymore. Students would rather be hands-on than spend hours on boring lectures in the classroom,” he noted.
SWU’s B-School is seeking to attract more students in the Visayas and Mindanao with the new business curriculum.
SWU is controlled by listed holding firm Phinma Corp. after the latter acquired a majority stake in the former in 2015.
Phinma has various interests in the education, steel products, housing, business process outsourcing and energy sectors.
Through its subsidiary Phinma Education, it holds significant equities in educational institutions, namely Araullo University in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, Cagayan de Oro College Inc., University of Pangasinan, University of Iloilo and Career Academy Asia Inc.
