Cebuanos invited to volleyball national team tryouts

SEVERAL Cebuanos have been invited to join the three-day national team tryouts that will be conducted by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) in a bubble setting in Subic on April 28 and 29, 2021.

The tryouts for the men’s and women’s volleyball teams will be at the Subic Gym, while those for the men’s and women’s beach volleyball squads are slated to be on April 30 at the Subic Tennis Courts.

PNVF president Ramon “Tats” Suzara said invitation­s have already been given to 40 women and 40 men for the volleyball tryouts, while 20 women and 20 men were given the call for beach volleyball.

The list includes notable Cebuano players such as Lorene Toring of Adamson University for women’s volleyball; Dan Aldrin Garnica of the University of Southern Philippine­s Foundation, Alden Dave Cabaron, John Edward Carascal, and Nilo Jasmin Jr. of Southweste­rn University-Phinma, and Anthony Ekwenugo of the University of San Carlos for men’s volleyball.

Creamline’s Sisi Rondina was invited for women’s beach volleyball while former University of the Visayas star Jade Becaldo was given an invite for men’s beach volleyball.

“The PNVF is currently prioritizi­ng its elite-high-performanc­e initiative­s through the National Team Commission,” Suzara said. “The national team will be focusing on the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi in December.”

The athletes, coaches, organizers and officials involved will undergo RT-PCR tests 48 hours before the tryouts with a guaranteed turnaround time of 24 hours.

National coaches Arthur “Odjie” Mamon (volleyball women) Dante Alinsunuri­n (volleyball men), Paul Jan Doloiras (beach volleyball women) and Rhovyl Verayo (beach volleyball men) will supervise the tryouts.
