Gunning for an upset
THE traditional view is that candidates of major parties and the widely known over the less known will prevail. But an upset can happen.
Those considered to be hoping for an upset include:
Independent candidate for Cebu City mayor Dave Tumulak over biggies Mike Rama of Barug and Margot Osmena of BOPK. In the past two decades or so, no independent candidate has beaten a major party rival.
One Cebu Party’s Tessie Heyrosa over Partido Pilipino Pagbabago Junjun Davide. Veteran Hilario Davide III has much higher “awareness” among voters and more personal connections with voters, having been a Cebu City councilor for two terms (2004-2010), a governor for two terms (2013-2019) , and the son of former Supreme Court chief justice Hilario Davide Jr. Junjun Davide’s rival Dr. Heyrosa, an eye ophthalmologist from Carcar City is running mate of formidable reelectionist governor Gwen Garcia but is almost a political virgin, having been a member of Sangguniang Kabataan, and virtually unknown in the rest of the province. She is not a politician but wants to serve, she said when she filed her COC last October.
