Valenzuela City-MJAS Zenith clobber Makati in MPBL

-

THE Valenzuela City-MJAS Zenith nipped Makati, 56-52, for their second win in a row in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Season 4 on May 3 at the Paco Arena.

Former VisMin Cup Most Valuable Player Jaymar Gimpayan had another strong outing as he hauled down 24 rebounds to go with his 17 points, three steals and two blocks. The win boosted Valenzuela City’s record to 2-1.

Meanwhile in the second game, Irvin Mendoza showed nerves of steel in draining two free-throws with less than a second left to push Marikina past Manila, 78-77.

Alfred Gayosa led the way for Marikina with 21 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Manila had the inside track on the win as they led, 77-76, after a three-point play by Ira Battiler with 13.9 ticks remaining.

However, on Marikina’s possession, they found a cutting Mendoza who got fouled with 0.1 of a second remaining. He then calmly sank two from the line to give the Shoemasters the victory.

The loss spoiled the return of former PBA star Joseph Yeo to competitive basketball. Yeo scored 12 points and added seven rebounds, six assists and two steals for Manila.
