Nueva Ecija snares Filbasket Summer Championship title
THE Nueva Ecija Capitals were crowned champions of the 2022 Filbasket Summer Championship after they edged the San Juan Knights in overtime, 90-88, in the winner-take-all Game Three of the finals on May 8 at the Muntinlupa Sports Center.
Tied at 87 apiece in the extra session, Renz Palma scored on a putback to put the Capitals in front, 89-87. San Juan pulled to within one after Justin Gutang split his free-throws, but Nueva Ecija raised their lead back to two after Michael Juico made one of his two free-throws.
The Knights had a shot at tying the game but Cebuano point guard Orlan Wamar missed his potential game-tying floater right before time expired, to give the Capitals the Game Three win and the crown.
Juico, who was named the Finals MVP, had 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.
Big man Michael MabuTHE lac added 16 markers and 13 boards, while Cebuano big man William McAloney had 12 points and five rebounds. Hesed Gabo produced 10 points, four assists and four rebounds.
Aside from the trophy, Nueva Ecija also received a cash prize of P1,000,000 for their win.
Gutang, the Filbasket MVP, led San Juan with 16 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and an assist while CJ Isit got 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals.
