Room for optimism

Some hoped that the outcome of the recently concluded national and local elections would end up differently, only to be disappointed. But, as I said, in a contest not everyone can be winners.

I don’t know about you but there are pressing matters that need attending like the continuing rise in fuel prices.
The trend has created a domino effect. Everything now is more expensive. Transportation. Electricity. Grocery items. Interestingly enough, the price of one particular liquor remains the same. Thankfully.
According to psa.gov.ph, “inflation for the bottom 30 percent income households at the national level continued to move upward as it rose further to 3.8 percent in April 2022. This brings the national average inflation rate from January to April 2022 to 3.2 percent.”
The numbers don’t look alarming, but many are still struggling to recover from the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the devastation wrought by super typhoon Odette last December. Trust me, they are feeling the pinch.
At this point, their main concern is if they have enough money to put sufficient food on their table or place a bet on the three daily draws of the three-digit number game Swertres because, let’s face it, the average income has not moved.
Despite these setbacks, though, I remain optimistic.
Cebu is in good hands. With Gwendolyn Garcia at the helm of the province and Michael Rama in control of Cebu City, who could ask for anything more?
I for one have first-hand experience of Governor Garcia’s work ethic as her former consultant. Hands down, she is the hardest working elective official in the archipelago, which explains why Cebu has weathered the Covid and Odette storms better than any other affected local government unit. As for Mayor Rama, well, he has a good singing voice but he works equally as hard.
I also believe both officials are sincerely looking out for the welfare of Cebuanos. And not just them, the other local leaders who got elected or were reelected had proven their mettle these past two years.
And that the overwhelming majority of them are allied to the presumptive administration should mean that Cebuanos can expect to get out of this mess quicker. Because if Cebu managed to stay afloat and even prosper during martial law as opposition country… well, you get my drift.
