In a world where success is often measured by wealth and status, one person has redefined what it means to be truly successful. Meet Nanay Nelly (real name Arnel Estorba), the owner of Nelly’s Best Online Kitchenomics, whose inspiring journey from humble beginnings to thriving entrepreneur has captured the hearts of many.

With a simple dream, a handful of pesos, and an unyielding determination, Nanay Nelly has proven that success is not just about what you achieve, but how you touch the lives of others along the way.

Small yet passionate beginnings

Armed with just 1,500 pesos in her pocket and a fierce passion for cooking, Nanay Nelly left Butuan and arrived in Cebu City. And little did she know that her drive and tenacity would eventually result in the creation of one of the most beloved and successful food businesses in the city: Nelly’s Best.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Nanay Nelly’s entrepreneurial spirit shone through. When her 1,500 pesos dwindled down to 500 pesos after purchasing basic necessities, Nanay Nelly used her passion for cooking to start a small food business.

Although her business started out small and depended on word of mouth, her savory creations quickly gained attention and became the talk of the town.

“I think that 500 pesos truly propelled my business, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Nanay Nelly shared.

Her business acumen and dedication eventually led to the expansion of her food venture from simple food packs to a thriving online kitchen: Nelly’s Best Online Kitchenomics.

Maintaining a growing business

Nelly’s Best has blossomed into a full-scale business, with six branches in the tri-cities of Cebu. Despite its modest prices—ranging from 29 to 59 pesos—Nanay Nelly’s dishes boast a complex blend of sophisticated flavors at an affordable price.

Its Lapaz Batchoy, which starts at 29 pesos, features a harmonious mix of tender pork meat, savory broth, fresh vegetables, and delectable toppings, resulting in a flavorful explosion that can satisfy even the most discerning palates.

Nanay Nelly’s commitment to using only the finest ingredients and traditional cooking techniques makes every bowl of Lapaz Batchoy a masterpiece that reflects her culinary expertise and passion.

Despite the rapid growth and acclaim, Nanay Nelly’s unwavering dedication to providing affordable, high-quality meals remains at the heart of her business.

Nanay Nelly’s business also created opportunities for those affected by the pandemic. Her business provided a lifeline for cooks who lost their jobs during the crisis, giving them a chance to showcase their culinary talents and support their families.

“My team is composed of people I have met before. I invited them to join me, and they graciously agreed. Throughout their stay, I promised them suitable wages and meals. Now, I have more than 50 employees. Some stay and others leave, but that shouldn’t discourage one to stop,” Nanay Nelly said.

Overcoming challenges

Nanay Nelly’s journey to success was not without its challenges. In December 2021, Typhoon Odette ravaged the Philippines, causing widespread destruction and disruption to daily life. Nanay Nelly’s business was not immune to the effects of the storm, and it became nearly impossible to make transactions during this time.

As a result, all payments were refunded. But instead of giving up, Nanay Nelly remained determined. Even during days without phone signal, she found a way to communicate with her customers and was thrilled to find that many still wanted to order her food packs and trays.

“Never stop doing what you love. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Do not let today’s setbacks stop you from achieving your dreams. Keep going.” Nanay Nelly advised.

Her remarkable success story goes beyond her exceptional culinary skills and business acumen. Her genuine desire to help and support others has made her a true hero, not just in the food industry, but also in the community. Her resolute commitment to creating job opportunities for those affected by the pandemic, while providing affordable and delicious meals, has touched the lives of many.

There is no universal formula for success, but Nanay Nelly’s formula is one filled with small yet passionate beginnings bolstered by the steady maintenance of a growing business and a commitment towards overcoming challenges.

Nanay Nelly’s remarkable journey is as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us all of the power of kindness and determination in making a difference in the world.
