BAN ON E-BIKES, TRIKES IN METRO MANILA STARTS
THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) began implementing a ban on tricycles, e-bikes (electric bikes), e-trikes and light e-vehicles on major thoroughfares in the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday, April 15, 2024.
The policy, based on a resolution approved by the Metro Manila Council (MMC) composed of local NCR chief executives, is motivated by concerns for road safety.
The MMC said using e-bikes on major thoroughfares poses risks and dangers to drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
MMDA chairman Don Artes said in a press conference Monday the apprehended violators will initially not receive violation tickets but will be informed about the policy.
“We are not issuing tickets yet, just informing violators. This is part of our information campaign and considerate of existing transport restrictions,” Artes said in Tagalog. “However, this doesn’t mean you’re allowed to use e-bikes on major roads; you are now prohibited. We simply won’t be ticketing and will ask you to leave.”
Artes said MMDA will start issuing violation tickets by Wednesday, April 17, 2024.
Driver’s license
The policy also requires e-bike drivers to have a driver’s license.
Failure to present one may result in the vehicle’s impoundment. Violators will be fined P2,500.
The ban on tricycles, e-bikes (electric bikes), e-trikes and light e-vehicles covers A. Bonifacio Ave., Araneta Ave., Commonwealth Ave., C.P. Garcia Ave., Del Pan/Marcos Highway/McArthur Highway, Elliptical Road, and Epifanio Delos Santos Ave. or Edsa.
The other major thoroughfares covered in the ban include Katipunan Ave., Magsaysay Blvd./Aurora Blvd., Mindanao Ave., Ortigas Ave., Pres. Quirino Ave., Quezon Ave., Recto Ave., Rizal Ave., Roxas Blvd., Shaw Blvd., Southeast Metro Manila Expressway, South Luzon Expressway and Taft Ave.
