A 16-YEAR-OLD high school student was stabbed to death by a Grade 6 pupil inside the Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Senior Central Elementary School along Ponciano Street in Davao City yesterday morning.

Supt. Eliseo Malana Jr., chief of the San Pedro police station, identified the victim as Alvin Ederosas, 16, a second year student of the Davao City National High School (DCNH) and a resident of Purok 5 Baryo Tagalog in Barangay 4–A Poblacion in Davao City.

The suspect is 14 years old.

Malana said the incident happened at around 10:30 a.m. when the victim went inside the school.

The victim succumbed to two stab wounds to his body.

“Basta, ang sulti atong kauban sa biktima, matud pa daw niya, naa lang daw sila’y bisitahon sa sulod. Wala daw sila nagdahom na ingon ato diay ilang dangatan didto. Matud pa ang suspect naa daw daan dala kutsilyo, pero sa bahin sa suspect, gitagaan ra daw siya (According to the victim’s companion, they just wanted to visit somebody inside. They said they didn’t expect this will happen to them. The one with the victim said the killer was already carrying a knife. But the suspect claimed he was just handed the knife),” Malana said.

Reynaldo Cañete, school security guard, admitted that he did not notice the incident, adding that he was surprised when he saw the suspect lying on the ground near their post.

Malana said according to those who witnessed the incident, the suspect was standing beside a grade six classroom when the victim arrived and accosted him. He added that the suspect and the victim engaged each in a fistfight first before the fatal stabbing.

“According to the suspect, selos ang hinungdan sa away nilang duha though wa siya nagdahom na ato daw ang abuton sa ilang away. Matud pa niya ang biktima daw ang maong una nisugod ug self-defense ra daw to iyang gibuhat (The suspect said, the fight erupted from jealousy although he claims he did not see it end this way. He claims he was just acting in self-defense),” Malana said.

Police failed to recover the knife used by the elementary pupil in stabbing Ederosas. How that came to be still has not been clarified.

Senior Supt. Ronald M. dela Rosa, director of Davao City Police Office (DCPO), in a separate interview, urged all the school security guards to strictly implement security measures in its area of responsibility.

“Dili na pwede na wala siya kabantay. Guaard siya unya wala siya kabantay na nag kagubot na sa iyang tungod. They should be alert especially mga estudyante na ilang ginabantayan dira (A security guard cannot just say he was not aware it happened. He’s the guard and there was already a rumble near him and still he claims he did not notice anything. They should always be alert. They are watching over children),” dela Rosa said.

Malana said they are still checking on the background of both victim and suspect although they have initial information that both are gang members.

The suspect is now at the Women and Children’s Protection Desk.
