Greenmob to kick off Eagle Week celebration

-

WITH the theme “Saving the Eagles, Protecting our Forests, Securing our Future,” the 15th Philippine Eagle Week will formally start with the GreenMob, a foot parade aiming to emphasize ecofriendly transportation, on June 2 at the Davao City Hall to San Pedro, then ending at NCCC Mall.

Similar activities to be conducted at the NCCC Mall Activity Area have been prepared by the Philippine Eagle Foundation for the week-long celebration intended to inform people about the need for wildlife and forest protection.

“We want to bring the reality in the forests to the people here in the city,” PEF executive director Dennis Salvador said. “We want them to know what’s going on there: the illegal hunting of the eagles and destruction of their habitat, and our organization’s efforts to remedy these problems.”

Among the activities scheduled for this year’s Philippine Eagle Week is “Fly Malaya Fly,” a children’s story telling session narrating the plight of the eagles in the wild.

A photo exhibit showcasing the efforts of the Philippine Eagle Foundation over the years will also be put on display. PEF merchandise will also be sold during the week, notably the David Tomb prints and eaglet stuffed toys.

Proceeds will go to the efforts of eagle conservation.

On February 24, 1999 Presidential Proclamation No. 79 declared June 4 to 9 of every year as Philippine Eagle Week. With the dwindling population of the eagles, the need for conservation and protection of the eagles from hunting and further destruction of its habitat becomes more important than ever.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation was established in 1987 to answer the threat of extinction of the Philippine Eagle. Since then, continuous efforts by the PEF have led to great victories in eagle and forest conservation, notably the birth of Pag-asa (Hope), the first eagle to be bred in captivity. PR
