Upsets rock DCAA chessfest
UPSETS rocked the third round of the 2013 Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) chess competition that opened Tuesday afternoon at the NCCC Mall Food Cove Hall.
Bemedaled Holy Cross of Davao College bet Ella Grace Moulic of Unit 6 bowed to Jose Maria College mainstay Joerlz Gimony of Unit 5 via time forfeit in their secondary girls clash.
Moulic’s father Alfred, in text messages to Sun. Star Davao yesterday, said in the vernacular, “Ella’s time dropped, a flag fall. She lost due to time because she used a new opening and she wasn’t familiar with the line.”
Lorraine Yngayo of Unit 8 fell at the hands of a Unit 3 entry in elementary girls while top-seed Bhing Joel Gimony of Unit 5 was subdued by Raymondwill Mirantes in secondary boys.
Joerlz Gimony scored perfect three points to lead the secondary girls division while Unit 8’s Zsuzsa Grace Tabudlong of Davao Wisdom Academy earned 2.5 points to grab the solo second spot followed by twopointers Moulic and Philippine Science High School’s Hannah Joyce Amoncio who shared the third and fourth spots, respectively.
Unit 6 chessers Gino Angelo Asuncion of the University of the Immaculate Conception and Daniel Rome Borinaga of Holy Cross College of Sasa each tallied three points to grab the lead in secondary boys followed by Bhing Joel Gimony and Mintal Comprehensive National High School’s Neil Teriote who each had two points.
In the elementary division, Earl Rhey Mantilla of Davao Wisdom Academy was also unbeaten after three rounds to pace the boys event while Kurt John Placencia of Magallanes Elementary School gained 2.5 points for the second spot.
Irish Yngayo, meanwhile, took the No. 1 spot in the distaff side with three points while Lorraine came second with two points.
The last three rounds will be played today at the same venue.
The first two placers in each category will advance to the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet that will serve as qualifying for the Palarong Pambansa. MLSA
