DCWD: No water crisis for city

-

DAVAO City will not experience a water crisis despite the El Niño, the Davao City Water District (DCWD) assured.

Imelda Magsuci, DCWD spokesperson, said this will be possible in “normal conditions” or without any power interruption since power interruption is DCWD’s number one problem in its operations.

Magsuci, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao yesterday morning, said, “99 percent sa supply sa DCWD is ground water. Power-dependent kaayo ta (99 percent of the power supply of DCWD is groundwater. We’re power dependent),”

The Philippine Atmo-

Avenue (from Durian Hotel to Davao Agusan Road); Cabaguio (from DECO Machine Shop to J.P. Laurel Ave, RGA Village, Cory Aquamarine, Palm Village, Sarphil Subd., Park View Avenue and SOS Village); and Lanang, Pampanga and Sasa (Davao-Agusan Road from Lanang to Sasa, Grand Regal Hotel, Ramos Village, Lizada Village, Villa de Davao Subd., Lanang Beach Club, Doña Asuncion Subd., Summerhill Village, Guadalupe Village, Insular Village I & II, Fortune Executive Homes, Nova Tierra Village, Belen Homes, Pampanga Executive Homes, San Roque Village, Don Lorenzo Homes, Bolton Village, Doña Pilar Village, Southern Homes, Doña Paz Village, Hacienda Village, Old Airport Road, Doña Aurelia Village, Lougemar Village, Marla Compound, Doña Salud, Mercedes Village, Camp Catitipan & AFP Mutual Homes and Davao International Airport).

The first single-phasing of power supply occurred on June 2 from 1:20 PM to 4:00 PM (2 hrs. and 40 mins.) and the second on June 3 from 3:30 PM to 11:00 PM (7 hrs. and 30 mins.).

DCWD acting general manager Edwin V. Regalado explained that singlephasing, either high or low voltage, damages a motor of a production well, thus the turning off of the 10 wells serving Line 2 of Dumoy WSS.

However, even when power was already fully restored in the affected DCWD facilities, water connections in elevated and northern areas still experienced water supply problems because said Line 2 of DCWD’s Dumoy WSS has not yet fully recovered.

Aside f r om t he reswitching on of the wells, Regalado also said that in order to restore normal water supply in its served connections, DCWD’s facilities need more time for pressure build-up and line delivery as in the case of these two recent power single-phasings. The situation was aggravated when the second and longer power singlephasing occurred while DCWD’s facilities were still recovering from the first one. (JOVANA T. DUHAYLUNGSOD)
