Proposed rendering plant passed on first reading

-

THE 17th City Council passed on first reading an ordinance approving a recommendation of the proposed rendering plant within the premises of the Ma-a Slaughterhouse to effectively control the foul odor.

Assistant city administrator for operations Atty. Jhopee Avance¤a-Agustin, who is also the acting manager of the City Economic Enterprise (CEE), said the rendering plant will be provided for by the Bankerohan Livestock Dealers Cooperative (BLDC), the city’s private partner in running the abattoir.

A copy of the resolution of the Ma-a Slaughter-

house Management Board (MSMB) stated that a rendering plant will address the waste disposal problem in the slaughterhouse.

Agustin said the BLDC disposes its carcasses and other waste into a pit.

However, the MSMB said a rendering plant is more advisable for the disposal of waste than the pit since it is more environment-friendly and more efficient in controlling the foul odor.

Agustin said aside from the proper waste disposal, the waste processed in a rendering plant will produce animal oil, the end product, which the cooperative can market.

The Ma-a Slaughterhouse is the first establishment that the city has partnered with a private group for its operation.

Agustin said the abattoir earned P1.7 million during its first full swing last month.

She said the city gets the P700,000 income, since the city and the BLDC agreed to have a 60-40 percent share of the revenue. ANC
