Radio employees fired over lechon
CAGAYAN DE ORO – Employees of a radio station in Cagayan de Oro City are protesting the dismissal of two of their colleagues over what they call a misunderstanding over lechon (roast pig).
In a letter to dxRU Radio Ultra president and owner Maria Clarisa Gualberto-Suan, the employees said trouble began after a lechon with a note “To Radio Ultra” was delivered to its office on the feast of St. Augustine last August 28.
The employees said the delivery boy told them it was a gift from Mayor Oscar Moreno’s son.
Thinking the lechon was for them, the employees feasted on the lechon.
“We thought the lechon was a gift to the employees in celebration of the city fiesta,” the employees said.
They realized something was wrong when they got a call from management telling them to bring the lechon to the owner’s house.
But the lechon was already gone.
According to the employees, they were called “patay-gutom,” “bulaos,” “bastos,” and “uncivilized” after the incident.
They were also likened to impoverished children fighting over food.
“Our dignity, which we value as individuals, remains even as we are just employees,” they said in the letter.
The issue escalated after management dismissed Wenefredo Dellava and Edgar Navarro, both veteran journalists. Sun. Star Cagayan de Oro
