‘Walk for Change’

- By Ivy C. Tejano

OVER 1,000 security forces and government agencies, including private sectors joined in the Unity Walk organized by the Police Regional Office (PRO) in Davao Region on yesterday morning.

With the theme: “Walk for a Change,” the event was simultaneously conducted in Davao City, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos), Davao Occidental and Davao del Sur.

Davao police regional director Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan said the event was conducted in support to all suspected drug pushers and users who surrendered to police authorities for reintegration to the community.

“We are calling on them (various government agencies and other sectors) to support the surrenderees because they need rehabilitation, they need counseling, and they need to be reintegrated back to their normal lives,” Gaerlan said.

He said the move is a nationwide approach, as he urged the members of the community to help the anti-illegal drug war of the government under President Rodrigo Duterte.

“We may get a sponsor from different sectors for a working foundation, some

shirts and in-kind goods, and food for the participants of the rehabilitation program since they will be doing different activities,” he said.

Gaerlan said the cause-oriented event for the drug surrenderees was a simultaneous activity nationwide to echo the fight against illegal drugs.

PRO-Davao has recorded around 51,752 self-confessed drug pushers and users who surrendered to the police here in the region.
