Deadlock in Game 2

Davao coaches eye Ginebra to even series

- By Adam B. Morrell

DAVAO City coaches expect the Ginebra Gin Kings to bounce back in Game 2 today after losing Game 1 to Meralco Bolts, 109-114, in overtime Friday evening in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup Finals best-of-seven series.

Holy Child College of Davao Reds coach Nestor "Tating" Sorrosa said the Kings will redeem themselves in Game 2 if they will work more on their defense considering the Bolts are in good shape.

"Eager, patient and has a very good import ang Meralco, but Ginebra will recover in a close game kailangan lang nila mag improve sa shooting," Sorrosa said.

Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) high school basketball team head coach Miguel Solitaria, for his part, said Ginebra would definitely try to even the series and come up with a better end game, adding: "I guess Ginebra's import Justin Brownlee should try to be more aggressive on the offensive end because the opposing import was just eating him alive in their first match."

Solitaria also said if Ginebra will be able to contain Allen Durham, they will dominate Game 2.

Assumption College of Davao (ACD) head coach Rollie Sancho, in a separate interview with Sun.Star Davao, said Meralco has great compsure and played with their hearts out in their first clash but Ginebra will overcome them in Game 2 since coach Tim Cone is master in adjustments.

"If Ginebra will do the running game it will be a big factor for them to come back. Alam naman natin na talagang veteran yung coach nila, so they will be able to adjust and will tie the series to 1-1," Sancho said.

Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) basketball team coach FO3 Kristian Lord Coquilla, meanwhile, said Ginebra started strong but was not able to keep their defense and they were missing shots.

"Sobrang daming missed shots nila. If Ginebra will work on improving their outside shooting, kanila na ang Game 2."

Durham lived up to expectations, erupting with 46 baskets on top of his 13 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and a steal in Meralco's win.

LA Tenorio's floater in the last 2.1 seconds sent the game into overtime after Durham's triple attempt failed as the end of regulation.
