PCG shoots down PAF

- by Adam B. Morrell

MARK "Mackhy" Mapute and Ali Marcial combined for 45 points as the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) shot down the Philippine Air Force (PAF), 87-80, in the AFP-PNP Sportsfest 2016 Basketball Tournament that resumed at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center yesterday.

PCG, which lost its debut outing to PRO 11, entered the winning column with a 1-1, win-loss card.

The hot-handed Mapute buried six triples from different angles including a back-to-back in the third canto to keep the Airmen at bay.

Marcial, for his part, dominated the paint for PCG cagers whose speed left PAF at a loss.

District staff for community relation services and playing coach Michelle Ursabia, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said they felt very reviving after winning the match, saying: "We will still practice since yung ibang teammates ko ngayon ko pa lang nakasama."

Ursabia also said he expects defending champion Bureau of Fire Protection and PRO 11 as the teams to beat in the tournament.

Mapute, in a separate interview, said he just did what he needed to do and was fortunate that he made the needed three-point baskets.

He also said that they will play the Firemen next, thus, they will have to double their speed and boost their stamina.

PCG's other top scorers were Ronald Bontor and Ursabia who canned 11 and nine points, respectively.

Don Dueñas scored 19 for PAF.

PRO 11, meanwhile, sank the Philippine Navy, 97-75.
