Songspell holds 'Tagumpay'

FOLLOWING their successful concert tour in the US Songspell held “Tagumpay,” a homecoming perfor mance of great talents at SMX Convention Center in Davao City last Nov. 5.

The group’s young and talented singers, with guidance from their dynamic mentors who are veterans in performing abroad, were successful in capturing the hearts of their audience as they sang different pieces – from Disney films’ theme songs to several timeless OPM. Their finale performance even left the concert-goers in awe when they gave their own rendition of the classic piece “Tagumpay,” a Lea Salonga original.

Being a college friend and classmate of Mignon Margaret “Koi” Sevilla truly made me proud seeing her on stage belting out Stephen Sondheim’s “Being Alive.” Through the years, Koi, who was already a brilliant singer back then, has definitely continued to improve her gift, and her performance that night was a tangible proof to this observation.

As I talked to her, I could sense her commitment towards molding the young artists be come better performers, not just as singers.

“The homecoming concert and other public performances of the group aim to develop the kids into confident performers and prepare them for interna tional shows,” Koi, Songspell’s musical director, said. “New members, most of them first timers on stage, were also in cluded in the homecoming show because we wanted to give ev eryone equal opportunity to be exposed to the joys and disci pline of the performing arts.”

“Furthermore, Songspell aims to inculcate to the children the desire to strive for excellence not just on stage but also in their ac ademic pursuits and teach them the importance of being responsi ble, disciplined individuals,” she continued. “But above all, Song spell is a family helping each oth er be the best that they can be!”

While their team continues to nurture their members, Songspell president Fernando Pareja shared his plans for the young talents.

“In keeping with the spirit of developing and training children, Songspell is looking forward to holding more dance, singing and acting workshops lead by wellknown professionals in the Philippine arts industry,” he said. “The group is also currently exploring future Europe and Asia concert tours as well as the traditional US concert tour that happens every two years.”

“Songspell will be very busy during the Christmas season with invitations from corporate groups to perform for their events,” he added. “Rest assured, Songspell will continue to develop local talents to become world-class performers.”

With the success of the homecoming concert, Songspell expressed their gratitude to the unending support and hard work of the parents.

“The parents, headed by the president, Mr. Fernando Pareja, make up the board members of the group and they work hand in hand with the production team to ensure the success of every trip and show,” Koi disclosed.

Songspell’s colorful costumes were handpicked and chosen by Brigitte Ansaldo while the wonderful patriotic stage set-up was done by 3MG Events Unlimited’s Donna Pareja , a songspell parent.
