HCCD-Unit 7 wins Dcaa HS cagefest gold medal
THE Holy Child College of Davao (HCCD) Reds-bannered Unit 7 defeated Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) of Unit 6, 71-65, to clinch the secondary boys gold medal of the 2016 Davao City Athletic Association (Dcaa) Meet at the newly-refurbished Rizal Memorial Colleges Gym over the weekend.
HCCD, coached by Nestor "Tating" Sorrosa, also booked a ticket to the Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet 2017. The team was a Davraa champion in 2014.
Unit 7 leaned on HCDC's reliable forward Vince Petdeo Cuajao who sizzled with 18 points in- cluding two triples at the stretch. Ricky Ruales added 17.
Unit 6, however, struggled sans forward Francis Escandor who was sidelined by an ankle injury during their semifinals clash against Unit 5.
Ateneo's Axel Doromal and Marion Angeles, however, sank 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Sorrosa, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said they were eager to win over a bigger Unit 6 squad and this they achieved through tough defense, putting pressure on their rival's key shooters.
"Ang among mga player kay mga bata pa (our players are still young) so the only way to win is to pressure defense and execute fast breaks," the multi-titled coach said.
He also said that the absence of Escandor played a big factor to their win since the six-two forward possesses an accurate outside shooting and can drive to the basket.
Unit 7 was also composed of Aljay Alloso, Emmiliano Escalera, Arvin Gillo, Vence Malero, Ashven Nortega, Ej Paquibot, Wenjoh Pepito, Joshua Reyes and Prince Silva with assistant coach Roger Rabasa.
