PATRONS buying used clothing at an “ukay-ukay” (used clothing) store at Yacapin-Daumar Streets, Cagayan de Oro City, panicked following a gunfight just outside the establishment that killed a store worker and two others on Sunday afternoon, February 19.
Police identified the victim as Mawi Batuintan alias Mawi Sulayman, 28, a resident of Barangay Bonbon, this city and a cashier at Jabar Marketing while the two suspects on board a motorcycle are still unidentified.
The police said the two gunmen shot the victim but were subsequently killed by the former’s friend. One other suspect escaped with a suspected gunshot wound while the victim's unidentified companion fled after the gun battle.
The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds on the different parts of his body. Erlinda Ocno, 56, a patron of the store and a resident of Ilaya, Carmen, sustained a gunshot wound from a stray bullet.
Authorities recovered one caliber .45 with an empty magazine, an extra caliber .45 magazine loaded with seven bullets, a cellphone, and the suspects' motorcycle. Police investigators said the shooting may have been the result of a blood feud or “rido.”
The victim's remains was immediately brought to Marawi City after the incident. City Councilor Zaldy Ocon, who rushed to the crime scene, said warring clans should not carry out retaliatory killings in the city.
"Hangyo nato nga unta dili lang himooon dinhi sa CDO (I just wish that they won’t do it in CDO)," Ocon said over local radio station.
