LED lights installed
THE City Engineer's Office started the installation of P19.5 millionworth of streetlights in Cagayan de Oro City's major streets.
City Engineer Rolando Pacuribot said the old sodium lights will be replaced with light emitting diode (LED) lights.
Pacuribot said they have started putting the LED lights in Capistrano Street, Tiano St., Osmena St., parts of Iponan village, and in Mastersons Avenue, Upper Carmen.
He said they target that all streets, whether it is in an urban area or the most remote area of the city, will be placed with these lights. He said the LED lights could very much help in saving energy and reduce the cost of lighting public places.
City Councilor Edna Dahino welcomed this development, saying this could lessen crime incidence in the city.
Dahino has sought to replace the streetlights as dim streets could be seen as an opportunity for criminals to attack.
She cited the recent incident where a working student was raped and killed by five persons who were reportedly drinking alcohol at the JR Borja Bridge before the crime happened.
She said the bridge is dim-lighted which could be a venue for minors to hang out and drink.
"We really need to focus on prevention, on how are we going to avoid this kind of incident from happening again. And so far, the lack of streetlights, lack of police visibility are the problems we observe," she said.
Dahino, chairperson of the committee on women and family relations, said the City Council will continue to support anti-criminalities projects of the current administration.
