NSTP joins in drug prevention campaign

- APPLE GUIAO-ALVAREZ, RN, MN

THE City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) has initiated a meeting last July 28, 2017 at Brokenshire College, inviting higher educational institutions (HEI) such as the Ateneo de Davao University, Brokenshire College, Holy Child of Davao, San Pedro College, St. Peter’s College of Toril, University of the Philippines –Mindanao, and other schools for its continuing partnership on the war against illegal drugs.

The meeting’s main agenda include the review of the roles and responsibilities of higher education on drug prevention and control and the discussion of the Republic Act 163, known as the National Service Training Program (NSTP) Act of 2001.

Mr. Ronaldo RiveraProgram Director of CADAC shared that the NSTP is a program that boosts civic consciousness and defense preparedness to students motivating them to serve the community. And when they graduate from their chosen courses, they can be called as National Service Reserve Corps, where they can be tapped by the government for literacy and welfare activities through joint effort of the DND, CHED, and TESDA.

Michael Aportadera, Action Officer of CADAC and the CADAC team motivates all the HEI’s offering NSTP to create programs that will utilize the potentials of the NSTP students in helping the drug reformists in the community. As such, the HEI’s NSTP programs cannot only help the students experience the real world but build them community leadership skills with passion to serve unconditionally.

The meeting did not end without the HES’ presentation of accomplishments in drug control and prevention. The sharing was very fruitful and has shown to have positive contributions to drug reformists. The mentioned activities were in line to CADAC’s and SAGOP KINABUHI’S aim of helping drug reformists to build better lives. Now, it showed that the Davao City Community is very passionate, willing, ready, and resilient to the challenges that the war against drugs may bring.

Indeed, CADAC is a great help and all of the HEI’s in our hope of an illegal drug-free country. And NSTP is an essential program to it. People dreamed of a developed community, but there can never be development without health, because health is always interrelated with development.

As such, with the current issue on drug addiction which is I believe is an opposite of health, it can never be solved alone by the government, but it takes everyone in the community to intervene it. The youths like the students in the tertiary level should be earlier trained to solve not only simple problems but they also have to experience how to solve complex issues in the real world.

Let us continue to build a DRUG-FREE world! Heal the world…
