Samalympics 2017 kicks off
SAMAL Island - In a bid to promote camaraderie among the employees of the local government unit (LGU), the city government of Samal Island kicked off its sports fest event last September 4, 2017.
The sports fest is an annual activity and is mandated by law under the city's Sports Development Program.
All officials and employees were encouraged to participate with an emphasis on the values of unity, camaraderie, solidarity, sportsmanship, and team work.
The activity serves as a venue for the employees to get out from their offices and utilize their skills and knowledge in different sports. At the same time, the activity will allow the employees to interact with other employees from different departments.
Centered on the theme “Work As a Team, Play As a Team...Aim To Win”, Samalympics 2017 kicked off with a parade of the competing teams bannering their respective colors.
The four competing teams are Blue Knights, Orange Archangel, Green Legions, and Golden Griffins.
The Blue Knights team is composed of the City Mayor’s Office, City Agriculture, City Administrator, City Veterinary, City Registrar. The City Vice Mayor's Office, Sangguniang Panlungsod, City Treasurer, City Tourism and Investment, City Planning and Development, and National Agencies make up the Orange Archangel team.
Part of the Green Legions are the City General Services, City Human Resource Management, City Budget, City Accounting, and City Engineer’s office. Lastly, the City Health, City Environment and Natural Resources, City Legal, City Assessor, and City Social and Welfare Development Office make up the Golden Griffins team. The four teams proceeded to the Samal Gymnasium for the opening ceremony, which was led by Samal Island Mayor Al David T. Uy, who officially declared and opened the sports fest.
A torch relay and lighting the symbolic sports fest flame signalled the opening of Samalympics 2017.
Sports coordinator Mark Latras led the oath of sportsmanship with the four team managers and a representative from Blue Knights, Orange Archangels, Green Legions, and Golden Griffins.
During the opening, Blue Knights bested the other teams for bagging best in uniform, banner design, cosplay, and mass dance demonstration competitions.
The two-week long Samalympics 2017 will have employees besting one another in chess, dart, scrabble, dama, word factory, table tennis, badminton, billiards, and traditional games. Each game has a male and female category. SAMAL PIO
