MOA inked to help Samal Island coops
ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMAL – The Local Government Unit of Samal, Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), and Samal Island City Cooperative Development Council (SICCDC) recently entered a tripartite Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on providing assistance to cooperatives in the island.
The Tripartite MOA signing was conducted during the Cooperative Month 2017 Culmination activity on October 24, 2017 at the Samal Multipurpose Gymnasium.
“The Cooperative Development Authority will be the advocacy body which means we will implement anything that is good for the cooperatives," said CDA 11 Regional Director Elma Oguis.
“And the LGU, under the local government code, is mandated to develop and strengthen the cooperatives, in like manner with the CDA," Oguis added.
Oguis also encouraged the cooperatives to capitalize on their strengths as they can do more to help their cooperators.
The whole day culmination activity was attended by 224 active cooperators from the different cooperatives in the island.
“Let us teach every cooperative management and accounting since it is a big help in running a cooperative," said Samal City Mayor Al David Uy.
With this year’s national theme, “Cooperatives: Empowering the poor and the vulnerable towards job creation and poverty eradication," the month-long celebration aims to address and enhance the role of the cooperatives in nation building and rural reconstruction and development.
“Coop officers, the future of our members is our obligation so I encourage everyone to perform based on our functions," said Vice Governor Alan Dujali, Provincial Cooperative Development Council Chairman, during the Tripartite MOA Signing.
On the other hand, as part of the month-long celebration, the Barangay Sectoral and Coop Division spearheaded a Mangrove Tree Growing activity last October 18, at Sanipaan Marine Park. The activity was well attended by the active cooperators.
Out of the 45 total registered cooperatives in Samal, only 20 are operating due to lack of education and training, among other factors. Anna Jezza N. Mondejar,Barangay Sectoral and Cooperative Division
