DAVAO City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio said that the Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) is doing its best to immediately act on garbage leachate that reportedly flows into Matina Pangi River.

Duterte-Carpio, in an interview last Tuesday, said that Cenro already gave a report on the situation including its recommendations.

“Naay recommendation sa immediate rehab and the problem is naa didto sa pond so ang ilahang gibuhat is kinahanglan nila i-replace tung submersible pump para dili mugawas ang duga and then kinahanglan nila ug rental sa equipment kay sa pagkakaron ang usable equipment is for purchase, dugay pa so ang immediate nila is mag rent ng equipment so gitabangan pud sila sa City Engineers nato (There’s a recommendation for the immediate rehabilitation. The problem is in the pond so what they need to do is to replace the submersible pump so that the leachate will not escape. They also need to rent equipment for that, as of the moment, the usable equipment is still for purchase and it will take time, so the immediate move is to rent, the City Engineer’s Office also assisted them),” she said.

The city mayor said the long-term solution is to close down the landfill and to open another landfill.

Duterte-Carpio said there are many areas for consideration in finding a new landfill and there is already a list but it is not the final list since many will possibly be eliminated because of the restrictions.

She added that those which are included in the shortlist will be offered the

purchase of property.

Duterte-Carpio also assured that the current situation in Matina Pangi is being addressed by Cenro.

“Ginabuhatan siya ug pamaagi sa atong Cenro, we hope to solve the problem the soonest possible time once na mapalit ‘tong pump and maka-rent ‘ta sa equipment (It is now being addressed by Cenro. We hope to solve the problem the soonest possible time, once the pump will be purchased and the rental of equipment will be done),” she said.

The 18th Davao City Council last Tuesday asked representatives from Cenro and Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR) to appear in next week’s session to explain their solution for the leachate and the longterm plan for the landfill.
