DPWH hit for slow highway construction

- Orlando B. Dinoy

STA. CRUZ, Davao del Sur - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) engineering district caught the ire of provincial board members over the slow implementation of road construction projects in Davao del Sur.

Board Member Lanier Cadungog on Thursday delivered a privilege speech condemning the lack of systematic road construction procedures and the never ending works on the same project, specifically within the national highway in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Cadungog passed a resolution on the same day requesting DPWH officials to fast track all the infrastructure projects in Digos City to Davao City national highways.

Motorists and commuters alike have raised concern over the never-ending road repairs in Sta. Cruz national highway where travel time from Digos City to Davao City has almost doubled due to the construction that has been existing for years now.

Even netizens have been blaming the DPWH for its failure to hasten the completion of the road projects and bridges.

The huge hole near Sta. Cruz public market, brought about by the bridge repairs, poses eminent danger to motorists.

Cadungog, in his recent Facebook post, told DPWH officials to deal with its contractors by constantly monitoring the status of the project.

Reports said some portions of the road widening in the area are plagued with claims raised by affected landowners.

Expropriation proceedings were noted as part of the delays according to some sources who claimed that some landowners and claimants have sought the assistance of private individuals who are expert in such field to expedite the payment.
