THIRTY-ONE young artists from public and private Junior High Schools in the city joined Davao City Water District’s 23rd On-the-Spot Watercolour Painting Contest on November 24, 2017 at the Matina Town Square Pavilion.

The competition is among the activities lined by DCWD in celebration of Water Consciousness Month in November in partnership with the City Government of Davao.

The masterpieces of the participants that highlighted the theme Water as the Source of Life were judged according to artistry (70%), concept (20%), and originality (10%).

Hailed as first placer was Julienne Antoinette T. Tan from Davao Christian High School, second placer was Akira Kane R. Jover from Davao Central College, and third placer was Kim Q. Solivio from Dr. P. Ocampo College Davao Campus. They all received cash prizes and plaques.

Completing the top nine winners were the six finalists, namely, Davao City National High School’s Trini Rose O. Bunao, Southpoint School’s Constance Alaina S. Gokong, Holy Child College of Davao-Jacinto Campus’ Norvie Mae M. Santoalla, Christian Colleges of Southeast Asia’s Allan Alexander C. Kadon, University of Mindanao Ilang High School’s Kimberly D. David, and Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School’s Angelie Marie A. Ronquillo. Each received a consolation prize and certificate.

Likewise, all participants, coaches, and schools were given certificates and DCWD-customized IEC materials.

With the active partnership of Davao Watercolour Society represented by Welehito Pepito, Vicente Aviles, and Gilbert Miraflor, the contest served as an avenue for the participants to hone their artistic skills as a tool in promoting water conservation and environment protection.

Prior to the competition, the judges also served as resource speakers in the Basic Watercolour Painting Seminar given to the contest participants on November 10, 2017.

The nine winning artworks will be displayed and put up for auction in an exhibit to be scheduled by DCWD in December 2017. All proceeds will go to the student-artists to help encourage and support their artistic aspirations. Camille Margarette U. Solon/DCWD
