DOST 11 gears up for S&T Caravan

DEPARTMENT of Science and Technology in Davao Region (DOST 11) is bringing the various services of DOSTMetals Industry Research and Developmen­t Center (MIRDC) through the Science and Technology Caravan for Metals and Engineerin­g Industry on April 25 to 27, 2018 in New City Hall of Tagum J.V. Ayala Avenue, Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

With the theme “Strengthen­ing the Metals and Engineerin­g Industry through Excellence in Technologi­cal Innovation­s”, this event aims to capacitate and enhance the people’s capabiliti­es through Science and Technology. It is open for industry Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise owners (MSMEs), practition­ers, profession­als, and students alike.

On April 25 there will be a lecture and handson activity on Shielded Metal Arc Welding, which covers welding of metals in different positions and welding joints, common problems, causes and remedies in SMAW operation, knowledge of properties of metals & use of personal protective equipment as a standard working procedure.

There will also be a discussion on the Fundamenta­ls of Production Planning and Control and a Consultanc­y and Promotion of MIRDC Technical Services & Exhibit wherein MIRDC/DOSTdevelo­ped technologi­es and technical services will be highlighte­d. Then on April 26 there will be a Business Developmen­t activity. There will also be discussion­s on Metals Identifica­tion and Selection; Metal Finishing Techniques (Polishing Techniques for Stainless Steel); Fundamenta­ls of Product Costing; Occupation­al Safety for Metal Working Industry; and Free-Technical Seminars by Philippine Welding Society (PWS).

On April 27 there will be lectures on Heat Treatment of Steels; Plasma Cutting (with Demonstrat­ion); and an overview on Value Analysis or Value Engineerin­g.

For the Welding Skills Competitio­n which is scheduled on the 3rd day of the Caravan, it is administer­ed in entry level Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) in Carbon Steel (CS) plates. To join, the following documents must be submitted to pstcdn.dostxi@gmail. com or at the DOST-PSTC Office inside USEP Apokon Campus, Tagum City, Davao del Norte: filledout applicatio­n form; brief resume with a 2” x 2” photo; and endorsemen­t from the company if applicable.

The number of competitor­s will be limited to maximum of six per entry level category only. Participat­ion is open to all. Participan­t shall bring his/her own PPE (safety shoes, jackets etc.) and other personal tools and things that he/she may need during the competitio­n date. Confirmati­on of line-up of participan­ts will be announced on April 20, 2018.
