Draw lots decides brgy kagawad winner

-

fate of two candidates for barangay kagawad in Kawayan, Calinan District was decided yesterday through the drawing of lots as each got the same number of votes.

As early as 9 a.m. in the morning, candidates for kagawads of Barangay Kawayan, Calinan, Davao City -- Cayetano Villarante and Arden Joey Endil -- waited at the Commission on Election District 3 office for the decision as to who will sit as kagawad, four days after the May 14, 2018 election.

Villarante and Endil each got 411 votes to share the 7th spot for the race for Barangay Kagawad.

District 3 election officer, Atty. Mohamad Omar S. Samama yesterday gave go signal for the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) chair Teofilo R. NarbaiChair, vice chair Analyn D. Gonzales, and member Ma. Janyne M Jallorma to officiate the draw.

Two pieces of paper were marked with numbers 7 and 8 were placed inside a box.

Endil drew the number 7, while Villarante got the number 8.

It was no hard feelings for Villarante, who served as a barangay official since 1982. He only lost once as kagawad, and he also lost a barangay captain race in the past.

“Para nako, nisugot man ta aning election taga-diha lang man ta sa barangay so siya man nidaog so pasalamat ta sa ginoo na siya na pud ang midumala sa barangay

(For me, since I subjected myself in this election, and he won so I am thankful to God that he won and will be leading the barangay),” he said.

He hopes that his supporters will accept that he lost.

Endil is a first-time candidate and is thus happy about how things turned out.

“I was nervous and pressured because the election in our area was supposed to be finished last May 14, but to us, me and incumbent kagawad Villarante, it only ended now. I am thankful to God this must be part of His plan. I have already prayed that if he will give the post to kagawad Villarante it would be fine for me but if we will give it to me, it will also be okay,” Endil said.

He added that part of his platform is to give more opportunities and empower the B’laan tribe in the area since he is also a member of that tribe.

According Samama, draw lots or toss coin are the ways to break a tie in the barangay elections.

Samama said around three cases of tie were resolved through toss coin in the third district. KVC
