Resiliency at its best

-

IWAS privileged to attend Career Executive Service Board (CESB) Thought Leaders Congress together with five other Division leaders from Davao Region and be able to listen to the inspiring stories of two world class Filipinos who never stop until they were able to reap successes one after the other. One came from a very poor family and the other one from Indigenous People’s community who proved that resiliency is bouncing back from debacle and downtrodden state to an improved and well lived life.

This Corner will focus first to Deped’s pride and will be giving you the other equally successful Filipino next week.

Dr. Jesus Insilada, currently the principal of Caninguan National High School in Iloilo was selected as one of the top 10 finalists for the 2018 Global Teacher Prize of Varkey Foundation from over 30,000 teacher-nominees from more than 170 countries is a public school teacher from the town of Calinog, Iloilo. He first taught English at AlcardeGustilo Memorial National High School in Calinog, Iloilo before being promoted to his current station.

He made the country proud and inspired as philanthropist Bill Gates of Microsoft Corporation made the official announcement on February 14 through the Foundation’s YouTube channel.

Dr. Insilada uses culture-based teaching and inclusive learning in transforming the lives of his students as a teacher and member of the Panay-Bukidnon Indigenous Peoples’ (IP) community. He is also an advocate of IP’s rights and welfare, and strives to contribute to making education culture-sensitive. As of this writing, at least 87 percent of his pupils have shown improvements in their grades as they learn through traditional dances, songs, local games and crafts.

The Global Teacher Prize searches for and recognizes the exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding impact and contribution to the profession.

This high achieving IP is now one of the 10 best teachers in the world together with the finalists from Turkey, South Africa, Colombia, United States, Brazil, Belgium, Australia, United Kingdom, and Norway, who all brought about positive changes in the lives of learners and their communities.

Dr. Insilada also won two Palanca awards for his Hiligaynon short stories in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, he was an honoree of the Many Faces of the Teacher (BatoBalane Foundation) and in 2014 he was chosen as one of the 2014 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teachers awardees for the Secondary level.

Deped Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said that Deped is truly proud of our teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty. She added that our Global Teacher Prize finalists have proven that Filipino teachers do not only impart knowledge to their learners, they also advocate great causes such as the promotion and preservation of culture – the very soul of our nation.
