Rebisco girls volley regional finals opens
THE 1st Rebisco Girls 18-Under Volleyball League regional finals unfurls today at the Martin Hall in Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) along Jacinto St, Davao City.
Rebisco national tournament director Johanz Buenvenida, who was accompanied by Balibolista de Dabaw coordinator Abet Bernan during Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao, said 10 are entered in the volleyfest that serves as qualifying for the national finals slated in November at the Ynares Sports Complex in Pasig.
"The regional finals champion will represent Southern Mindanao in the nationals against representatives from other regions and two international teams," Buenvenida said.
Vying for honors are teams from Mati City, Digos City, Tagum City and Davao City.
Representatives from Mati City are Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy and Mati National High School while
Cor Jesu College and Digos City National Comprehensive High School are Digos City qualifiers.
University of Mindanao and Sto Niño National High School will banner the colors of Tagum City as the Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City National High School, Holy Cross College of Sasa and Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School will represent the host city.
Buenvenida said is a new version of the Shakey's V league.
"This league has been running for 16 years now. Our sponsor might have changed but it is still the league we held the past years," he said, adding that the program focuses on the grassroots level.
He also said that prominent volleyball superstars were mostly discovered in the league the likes of Alyssa Valdez, the Santiago sisters and Mae Luna, among others.
Worth P25,000 of Mikasa equipment plus trophy and medals will be given to the champion team while runners-up will receive trophies and medals.
Bernan, meanwhile, said they will host a simple opening ceremony that will be graced by Rebisco executives, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioner Charles Raymond Maxey and Ateneo de Davao University athletics director Noli Ayo.
