-

Banning of disposable plastic items such as drinking cups will be implemented by the city government of Davao to help lessen the usage of plastics in the city.

Davao City Administrator Zuleika T. Lopez said the policy to ban the use of plastic will be implemented during meetings, conferences, etc., adding that they are encouraging department heads to bring their own cups during meetings to avoid the use of plastics, including water bottles.

“It has been found out that much of the garbage generated is composed of plastics and all forms of (it). The City Government of Davao is coming up with a policy to ban the use of plastic,” Lopez said.

Interface Development Interventions, Inc. executive director, for her part, said, “We are really happy that Atty. Lopez and the CDC- Execom agreed when we presented this policy.”

She also said that the initiative of the Davao City local bodies will serve as contribution in the reduction of plastic wastes as part of the Environment Month celebration. An endorsement letter from the Davao City Planning and Development Coordination (CDC) was sent to Councilor Diosdado Mahipus, Sr., Chairperson for the Committee on City Environment and Natural Resources, last August 6, 2018, stating the request for ‘the members of the City Council to enact an ordinance banning the use of single-use plastics and encouraging the reusable alternatives in meetings’.
