A Pinsker’s hawk-eagle was caught in a snare after it got in a fray with a farmer’s chickens in barangay Mabuhay, Paquibato District last September 16, 2018.

Lino Colecha, 51, a resident of the area, was the one who accidentally caught the hawk-eagle. His wife, Jocelyn, surrendered the hawk-eagle at Peace 911 as their barangay captain advised them to since they do not know what to do.

“Nakig-away man ni sa among manok, mao nalit-agan. Nakit-an namo sa Facebook na eagle gyud so giingnan mi na i-turn over (This bird fought with our chicken that is why it was accidentally caught. We saw on Facebook that it was indeed a hawk-eagle and many people told us to turn this over),” Jocelyn said.

The hawk-eagle, which was brought to Peace 911 office yesterday, was identified by Efren Tagorda, ecosystem management specialist (EMS 2) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 11.

Tagorda, during an interview with SunStar Davao, said that the hawk-eagle should not have been caught in the first place and that they will schedule its release after assessment as the hawk-eagle does not have any injuries.

“Healthy man siya, wala siyay injury, medyo stressed lang siya kay tungod siguro sa byahe (It is healthy, no injuries at all. But it’s a little bit stressed maybe because of the travel),” Tagorda said, adding that its category belongs to the endangered animals list.

“Ibalik unta namo siya sa iyang gigikanan, within Davao, as soon as possible (We will release it to where it was caught as soon as possible),” Tagorda said.

Meanwhile, Tagorda advised the public not to catch or injure a hawk-eagle as they are protected by the law.

“Kung makakita mo ug mga ingon ani, ayaw lang ninyo dakpa kay dako ni sila ug kahimuan sa atong katilingban ug sa umaabot na future (If you see birds like this, please do not catch them because they contribute a lot to our society and our future),” he said.
