Research on the 2011 flash flood incident in Barangay Matina Crossing, Davao City has provided lessons in disaster risk reduction that have been shared with counterparts in other Asian countries.
In the Asia Future Conference 2018 held in Seoul, South Korea on August 24-28, 2018, the research paper, “Communication and social capital towards mitigation of urban vulnerability to natural disasters”, by Assistant Professor Karen Cayamanda of UP Mindanao Department of Humanities and Mitchiko Lopez (Office of Research), highlighted the significant role of social customs to build disaster resiliency in local communities.
Another paper, “Towards a human-ecological dimension of disaster resiliency: Exploring a social vulnerability model for sustainability” emphasizes the role of local culture for contextspecific disaster risk reduction strategies. This also earned its author, Prof. Cayamanda, a Best Presentation Prize.
In the Southeast Asia Disaster Risk Governance Academic Seminar held in Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand on September 24-26, 2018 were also presented the following papers: “A Reception Analysis of the risk communication system among the floodprone communities in Davao City” by Prof. Cayamanda; “Community resilience to urban flooding: A case study of the 2011 flash flood in Davao City “by Ms. Lopez and Prof. Cayamanda; and “Potentials and pitfalls of crowdsourcing in disaster communication” by Asst. Prof. Dennis Sumaylo (Humanities).
According to the authors, the Davao City local government units provided data and support, and are the primary beneficiaries of the research. /
