Manila - Despite his recent tirades against Catholic Church leaders, President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday, December 8, joined the Catholic faithful in commemorating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

Duterte, in a message, called on his fellow Filipinos to emulate Mary's "selflessness."

He was hopeful that the narrative of Mary's Immaculate Conception would serve as a "constant reminder" of her humility and thoughtfulness when she accepted the invitation to be Christ's mother so that the plan of salvation would be realized.

"I join the entire Filipino Catholic Community in commemorating the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary," the President said, in time for the observance of the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

"Let us emulate Mary's qualities as a humble and caring person and remain guided by her faithfulness as we strengthen our devotion and nurture our lives with unconditional love and good deeds that will benefit the Filipino people," he added.

In December 2017, Duterte signed Republic Act 10966, declaring December 8 of every year as a special nonworking holiday in the Philippines, in commemoration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
