Some students in Davao City sign up to shift to vegan diet or the total abstinence in eating meat to protect the animals and the environment.

Animal rights activist Jofer Santos, during Friday's Connect media forum at the SM Lanang Premier, January 11, said that their team has been putting up desks in schools to encourage students and some showed interest in veganism.

In Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU), there were some 40 students who signed up, while 80 students also signed up at Mindanao Medical Foundation College (MMFC). The team has been accommodating students in Malayan Colleges Mindanao (MCM) this week.

Santos said that students in these schools have shown interest in the videos they showed and leaflets that they gave out. He said that the number is already a lot.

“Ang pagiging vegan, hindi lang natatapos sa kinakain lang natin. It's when you are totally against even animal entertainment," Santos said, adding that gigantic aquariums in Luzon showing sea creatures should not be embraced by the public as these creatures were forcibly taken from their own habitat.

Meanwhile, Santos said that in Manila, there have been a lot of animal rights activists and vegans so he's only trying to promote the advocacy to Dabawenyos.

"I believe na lahat tayo mabuting tao. We all love the animals. The thing is, hindi tayo aware kung ano ang nangyayari sa ibang animals na kinakain natin," he said.

"Naniniwala ako na ang mga tao ay kayang mabago kung bibigyan lang ng sapat na knowledge or education," he added.
