Taguig City Representative Pia Cayetano said she supports the creation of a Department of Sports to boost sports development in the country.

“Support ako dyan because I believe that sports should play a very big role in the development of a child,” she said during a media interview on the sidelines of the 4th Pinay in Action (PIA) Cup ladies football tournament at Tionko field in Barangay 76-A, Matina, Davao City.

Cayetano, who also founded PIA, added that having a Department of Sports would pave the way for its representative to be part of the decision making in the Cabinet.

She added, “If there is no Cabinet level official (for sports), ma left behind din ang opportunity for sports.”

House Bill 65, authored by former Davao City representative now Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles and PBA Party-list representatives Jericho Jonas Nograles and Mark Aaron Sambar; HB 287 by 1-PACMAN Party-List Rep. and outgoing PBA Chairman Michael Romero; and HB 3633 by former broadcaster Antipolo City Rep. Cristina Roa-Puno are aimed at creating the Department of Sports.

During the 2016 top level sports consultative meeting at Century Park Hotel in Manila, Representative Conrado Estrella III, chairman on committee on youth and sports, also eyed the creation of the Department of Sports.
