ENJOYING PASTIL ANYWHERE, ANYTIME

- BY JENNY MOLBOG-MENDOZA mendoza.jenngrace@gmail.com

If you are a fan of the famous Maguindanaoan delicacy pastil, but, do not want to carry it in its traditional form, you will surely love this innovative product.

Rovelyn Aguilar, who has been famous for being the Pastil Queen in Davao since 2017, made sure that everyone gets to taste the sumptuous and original kagikit (the local name for the filling/topping of the rice wrapped in a piece of banana leaf ) without the need of going to the place located in the south-central part of Mindanao.

Pastil Queen’s very own kagikit surely tastes authentic. After all, its owner’s main purpose in venturing into such business was to continue the legacy of his parents, Wilma and Herminigildo.

Rovelyn narrated that when they were still living in Cotabato City, selling the well-loved dish was their business. Thus, after so many failed ventures here in Davao, she finally decided to continue their family business. However, this time, she introduced an innovation.

Rovelyn, a food technologist by profession, definitely knows how to improve the product, particularly its shelf-life. With the help of her husband, who is a mechanical engineer, Pastil Queen was able to solve the problem.

“The issue with the usual pastil is it shelf-life because of the banana leaf, and that’s what we addressed,” she said.

Pastil Queen is available in 120-gram and 220-gram bottles, and in classic and spicy flavors. And if you are bringing the product abroad or to other places, you can always opt for the pouch packs. Do not worry, too, since its packaging is really something that you can brag about. You can even buy more of it as pasalubong or gifts.

Amid the popularity of the product, Rovelyn is thankful to the Branding and Equity Development Program and Negosyo Center for guiding her and for giving her the opportunity to improve her product continuously and be known.

In Davao City, I personally buy mine at a stall near the Robinson’s grocery store in Abreeza Mall. For only P180 for each bottle of 220 grams, I can already have a non-messy, super delicious main dish while on a roadtrip or whenever I do not feel like cooking at home. By the way, Pastil Queen is also available in traditional banana leaf wrap for P25 each.

Imagine yourself enjoying your favorite food anytime and anywhere. You do not even need utensils to enjoy it!
