After almost two weeks of campaigning against unsafe driving initiated by the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), the number of apprehended violators reached 3,172 as of yesterday, February 18.

Of this number, 28 were violators of RA 10586 or the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013. A total of 865 violators were also apprehended for violation of the traffic law RA 10054 or Motorcycle Helmet

Act of 2009, while 2,279 erring motorists were given citation tickets for violating RA 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

DCPO Director Police Senior Superintendent Alexander Tagum clarified the public’s perception that their operation against DUI is only limited to motorcycle riders as they also apprehended four-wheeled vehicles.

“That is wrong, that is false. Hindi totoo ‘yan,” he stated.

In fact, data showed that of the 28 DUI recorded, three of these are four wheel vehicles while 25 are motorcycles. Regardless of the type of vehicle, they will impose the law if they were found violating it.

He added that the high number of netted violators was a direct result of the escalated number of personnel deployed on the streets and strict implementation of the traffic laws.

There are some 200 traffic enforcers who were dispatched around Davao City to intensify the campaign even in far-flung areas of the city such as Marilog, Calinan, Toril, Bunawan, and Paquibato.

Tagum also warned violators, “I hope this will serve as a warning to the public. Ayaw gud ninyo ipugos ug inom human drive. (Do not force yourself to drink and drive).”
