UPMin students sweep top prizes at 3rd Projéto Design Competition 2019
BS Architecture students of the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao won top prizes in the 3rd Projéto Design Competition 2019 that was held on May 11, 2019 as part of the Philippine Building and Construction Exposition (PhilBex) Davao in SMX Convention Center Davao.
Working within a given constraint of a 30-square-meter living area for a married couple with five pieces of furniture and a two-year old female child, the participants were given lead time to conceptualize designs, build scale models, and create the accompanying visual presentations.
Organizers said 15 entries were submitted and six were selected as finalists who presented their designs on competition day.
The judges were architects Daniel Lim, Jasper Resari, John Setarios, Val Lois Israel, and interior designer Hazel Resari.
The "Flexi Filipino" design, by the UP Mindanao team composed of senior students Louis Alvarez, Jairo Christian Royo, Pamela Puig, and Frances Ianelle Campo, was awarded as the Grand Winner.
“We used the concept of the bahay-kubo - where Filipinos eat, sleep, play, and celebrate with guests all in one mixeduse, flexible space - which we adapted onto a condominium unit. We used sliding panels for privacy and to achieve flexibility. We adopted a color scheme built around yellow which radiates happiness and motivation. The furniture pieces are modular and convertible. Our design can produce seven different layouts which the couple can choose from,” the team members explained.
The 1st Runner-up was "Pamulak" by a UP Mindanao student team of first-year students.
The 2nd Runner-up prize went to "Kasya: The Maximum Potential of Simplicity” from another team of first-year UP Mindanao students./
