SHANGRI-LA BORACAY

- BY JINGGOY I. SALVADOR jinggoysalvador@yahoo.com

In Boracay island, luxury has a name: Shangri-La. It's the brand one would expect nothing less than grand, only this one is in a tropical setting.

Shangri-La's Boracay Resort & Spa is a 12.5-hectare tropical paradise. It was strategically built within the island's lush forest with a shoreline facing the West Philippine Sea. Structures were designed to make full use of the topography to maximize the island's assets while being mindful with nature's preservation.

An essential part of this Shangri-La signature luxe ribe is privacy. Its location in the northwest tip of the island allows it. It is detached from the popular stretches of Boracay but offer an equally distinct island affair with its private beaches. White sand, crystal clear sea water and amazing sunsets.

What the White Beach offers, Shangri-La can— with a more private and luxe experience. The spacious, well-appointed rooms and common areas nest in lush greenery, which extends tranquility, and showcase the blues of sky and sea. The two private beaches are accessible through the evergreen trails.

With the resorts orientation to West, Shangri-La makes for an idyllic setting to catch the magnificent hues of blazing red, orange and yellows at day's end. Whether you catch it from the privacy of

the room's balcony, along the shoreline or the cliff top bar, the moment's magic is identical.

Shangri-La Boracay is one the leading ecotourism players in the hotel industry. But after the island's rehabilitation, the hotel is pushing its program a notch higher and lessening its carbon footprint. It has aligned with Department of Tourism's call for a sustainable ecotourism.

“When the island re-opened last October 2018, Shangri-La's Boracay Resort & Spa undertook the initiative to stop using single-use plastic in the resort and changing to more environment-friendly materials. We no longer use plastic straws and cups, and changed the takeaway boxes to paper, plastic water bottles to glass, plastic bath amenities to ceramic,” said Mica Cordero, Director of Communications of Shangri-La's Boracay Resort & Spa.

The hotel is a sustainability leader in Boracay. Its effort to go single-use plastic-free is a big step in making a stand for the environment. This is also the hotel's way to educate guests and colleagues to opt for and support a more sustainable approach in the hotel's daily operations, said Mica.

“Public interest was definitely piqued after the island reopened, as everyone wanted to experience the new and better Boracay. What's important to note is the responsibility also of guests and tourists when going to the island, to do their part in the island's sustainability.”

The next time you're in Boracay, stay at Shangri-La and experience first hand how they define tropical luxury and sustainable ecotourism.
