TACAY, SELGA BOW OUT; ALCOSEBA STAYS ALIVE

Day 8 of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games proved to be a challenge for Dabawenyo athletes

MANILA - Filipino 2017 silver medalist Rexor Tacay of Davao City bowed out in the elimination round of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games men’s karate -67 kg kumite event at the World Trade Center here yesterday, December 8.

The 27-year-old Tacay, a finalist in the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, absorbed a 0-6 beating at the hands of Dang Hong Son of Vietnam. The latter salvaged a bronze medal in the event topped by Thailand’s Ngamphuengphit Supa who crushed Malaysia’s AB Malik Muhammad Arif, 7-0, in the finals. The Malaysian karateka settled for the silver.

Philippines, as of 4 p.m. December 8, collected one gold, one silver and six bronzes so far in karate competition.

At the Deca Wakeboard Park in Clark, Pampanga, the Philippines mixed cableski team of Maiquel Jawn “Mikee” Selga of Davao City, Stephanie Nicole Kramer, Ralph Gelo Villaro and Ronnie Villafranca, landed fourth yesterday, December 8.

“Bawi lang kami next SEA Games,” Selga told Sun.Star Davao.

Over at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, the Philippine men’s soft tennis team secured a semifinals berth against a still undetermined opponent. This after recovering from its 1-2 loss to Thailand by eking out back-to-back wins opposite Indonesia, 2-1, and Cambodia, 2-1, yesterday, December 8

Dabawenyo Mark Anthony Alcoseba’s first doubles pair with Noel Damian, Jr. and the second doubles tandem of Mikoff Manduriao and Dheo Talatayod lost to the Thais while Joseph Arcilla spanked Kawin Yannarit in their first single match played in the second set.

Against Indonesia, Alcoseba-Damian and Arcilla won the first doubles and first singles, respectively, while Manduriao-Talatayod lost anew.

However, in the match against Cambodia, Alcoseba-Damian succumbed to their first doubles rivals while Arcilla and Manduriao-Talatayod emerged victorious.
