THE Negros Occidental Beach Volleyball Club (NOBVC) men’s and women’s A teams of Bacolod City dominated the Samal Island-PSC Summer Beach Volleyball Open at the Kaputian Beach Park at the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) over the weekend.

NOBVC-A tandem of Deanne Neil de Pedro and Elgie Ronquillo kept their momentum down the stretch to survive past Davao City’s Jujet Vates-A pair of Calvin Sarte and Jan Ashley Jacob, 21-17, 21-18, in their gold medal match. Jujet Vates-A settled for the silver.

Dabawenyo Sarte praised the NOVBC-A men beach spikers, saying, “Nindot ang dula hangtod nahuman dikdikan ang laban (The game was great, it was a stiff fight until the end).”

He said their rivals have prepared well and the De Pedro-Ronquillo partnership has gone a long way back since the Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) days.

“Kami ni Jacob, pang duha palang namo nagkuyog sa beach volley. Tapos ang beach volley, Maam, kailangan gyud time para mas mailhan pa nimo imong partner sa court ( Jacob and I just paired for the second time. In beach volley, it takes time to know your partner on the sand court),” the former Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) varsity standout said.

The men’s bronze went to NOVBC-B team of the Sugaton twins, Philip and Peter, who breezed past Barbs-Gensan with a win by default due to injury.

In a recent interview, Philip said that they will rely on their long experience of training and playing together to secure even just a semifinal berth.

Meanwhile, the NOVBC-A women’s pair of Honey Grace Cordero and Mary Jolyn Ebro outlasted Norminvacar Jespera Beach Resort CDO-A in a comefrom-behind 12-21, 21-15, and 15-12 victory to capture the title. The latter took the silver instead.

Norvminvacar Jespera Beach Resort CDO-B also copped the women’s bronze after eking out a 21-17, 21-12 victory over Mapbern-Davao.

The champion teams of each division received P15,000 while the runners-up claimed P10,000, and the next two placers pocketed P6,500, and P4,000, respectively.

A total of 20 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams competed in the two-day beach volleyfest presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in cooperation with the Igacos local government unit (LGU).

Davao City-based Balibosta de Davao sanctioned the event.
