Cluster VI holds an inset on 5S
Cluster VI school heads and coordinators had an inset on “5s Plus 2 (+1): Re- engineering the Basics of Housekeeping” with the general principle, “Right file at the right place all the time” at San Matias High School last October 08.
5s stands for Sort, Systematize, Sweep, Standardize, and Self discipline. These words were translated from the 5 Japanese words. It was developed by Hiroyuki Hirano after the WWII in 1940, wherein the products of Japan had low quality. It was found out that those organizations that implemented 5s became organized and in order.
Through the findings of its efficiency and effectiveness, the inset on 5s was organized to achieve performance excellence through workplace and record management. It was attended by the 17 school heads of Cluster VI with their respective 5s coordinators and San Matias Department heads.
The inset aimed to identify the basic principles and requirements of the 5s plus 2 (+1) process: to uncover the 5s plus 2 (+1) process winning strategies and best practice of work place and record management; and to identify specific frameworks needed to support effective implementation of a schoolwide 5s plus 2 (+1) process.
5s plus 2 housekeeping is the foundation for all the organizational systems/ processes that can help people contribute to improve the workplace.
If the essentials of 5s housekeeping will be implemented, the workplace will be cleaner, better, organized, and operations become easier and safer; results are visible to everyone; problems are detected fast; people are disciplined and people are happier with high morale and with low accident rate.
5s is a systematic approach to workplace organization. On the other hand it can easily become a stumbling block if not implemented correctly.
This inset was conducted through the initiative of the cluster VI chairman Maribeth S. Santos and the principal of San Matias High School, Rowena Quiambao, with the full support of the Cluster VI school heads, with the assistance of EPS Research and Evaluation Alvin Gozun and Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Leonardo D. Zapanta. It was facilitated by Theresa F. Angeles.
