Female Marine officer found dead in own car inside camp

-

A FEMALE Marine officer was found shot dead inside a military facility in Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City, the Philippine Navy reported Friday.

The body of 1st Lieutenant Shelina Calumay was found around 6 am last Wednesday with a gunshot wound in the face, said Navy public affairs officer Lieutenant Commander Marineth Domingo.

Calumay’s body was discovered by Marine personnel at the driver seat of the victim’s car at the parking lot of Jurado hall inside the Naval Station Jose Francisco.

Calumay, a member of the Naval Officers Candidate Course 13, was married to a Marine sergeant. Domingo said Calumay recently gave birth to a child.

“Initial result of the investigation disclosed that she sustained a gunshot wound in front of her face. Her personal belongings, that is her wallet and cellphone, is nowhere to be found. No firearm was also found in the vicinity, said Domingo.

“A hole was seen on the left window of the car. Paraffin Test and autopsy were also conducted,” added Domingo.

She said the Southern Police District is leading the investigation. Domingo said the Navy’s Provost Marshal General is conducting a parallel probe “to complement the efforts of the Philippine National Police” and “in line with the Navy’s support for the speedy resolution of the case.”

“The investigation is still ongoing. Close coordination is being done by the Navy and PNP,” she said.

She said senior Navy and Marine officers responded to the scene “to show their support” for Calumay who she described as “kind-hearted.”

“The Navy is extending its condolences and deepest sympathy to her husband, Ser- geant Jeremy Calumay, who is a also Marine and her baby, and all her loved ones,” she said, adding the killing is “really saddening.”

On whether the motive was robbery, Domingo said, “We cannot rule out anything yet. We have to see the final result of the investigation. This is already a police matter though we have a parallel effort in support to the PNP in gathering facts.” (VR/Sunnex)
