According to Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon that we can use to change the world.” We know that education is one of the key to be successful in our lives. The success of each citizen is also the success of a country. Education is the key for a nation to prosper. Education prepares us for our future.

Where can we start to be able to change the world we live in? We have to start in learning the importance of education; how it can affect us when we stop learning. In the Philippines, every year the numbers of out of school youth are increasing rapidly. The National Statistics Office said that 28.9 percent of this out of school youth did not pursue their studies due to high cost of education. Even though the government is providing a free education in the public schools, sometimes there are schools that collect extra funds for their extracurricular activities, or some Filipinos cannot afford to send their children to school because of not enough income. For those 27.5 percent of this out of school youth stopped due to lack of interest. Some of these students want to work more than to study, because of poverty they know how difficult life is, so there are in a hurry to work and earn money to help their family. It is also possible that their parents force their children to work rather than finish their studies. If this situation continues to arise, how can this country be develop and prosper. The government has a big role in education. It is not enough that they give budget to every school. They must also invest time to check the reality with what is happening now.

If they know the real situation, they will have an idea on how to solve the problem and help the education system. The government has the responsibility to funds every program and ensure that each student receive a quality education. We must remember that economic achievement is based on education. Education is the heart of a nation’s success. If more people will be properly educated, more people will be aware and be mold into ideal citizens. Education will help us to survive the real world, build a strong economy and contribute to a healthier environment. It will bring a brighter future for everyone. In other countries in Southeast Asia like Japan, Korea, and Singapore they are committed in building an impressive education system. Our government must do the same. The government must be committed in improving our education system, it is not only through financial support but there must be a commitment. If we want to change the world, we must start with our selves. We must set our goals in life. It doesn’t sound easy, but nothing is impossible. We can achieve these goals through education. We must value education. Poverty shouldn’t stop us from going to school. If we want to make things happen, we can, believe in our ability, think of how we can achieve our goals. There are a lot of ways for us to achieve education. As a Filipino, one of our characteristics is being a hardworking, if we want to finish and attain education but we don’t have enough money, then, we can get a part-time job; at the same time attend school. Remember, if you are not willing to learn no one can help you but if you are determined no one can stop you.
